How This Granola Changed my View of Granola Forever

Granola and I have always had a love-hate kind of relationship. I like the taste of granola, but, even as a teenager, learned that it was kind of a fake healthy food – one loaded with sugar. Therefore, it was also a food that I chose not to eat often. As an all foods fit dietitian, I know that there’s room for added sugar in any healthy diet. Personally though, I’d much rather choose to add sugar by means of cookies and chocolate, as opposed to foods like granola, that are supposed to be healthy.

Over the past few years, with the rise of all things health and wellness, I’ve noticed granola making a comeback in a big way. People started catching on to the fact that many well-known granola brands were loaded with added sugar, and brands responded. It’s so exciting to me that granola – a food once known to be a secret health bomb – can now totally be a part of a healthy diet.

When it comes a healthy granola, I look for 3 things: fiber, not a lot of added sugar, and all real ingredients. That’s why I was so excited when I learned about Paleo Passion Foods granola. Not only does it have everything I look for in a granola and more, but the taste is incredible. Seriously – Paleo Passion Foods was kind enough to send me two bags of their granola, and I finished them so quickly that I had to go back to the store to buy more so that I could actually take some photos (#noshame).

Here’s what makes this granola so awesome:

 

1. INGREDIENT LIST (based off Maple Cinnamon Grainless Granola)

Check this out for an ingredient list: Walnut, Shredded Coconut, Almond, Maple Syrup, Wildflower Honey, Pecan, Pumpkin Seeds, Sunflower Seeds, Apple (unsulfured), Golden Flaxseed, Cinnamon.  

All whole foods! Ingredients so real that you could even make this granola at home if you wanted to (but don’t, because this taste is pretty hard to beat). I love that with this granola, you know exactly what you’re putting in your body. Every ingredient in the bag is a real, whole, nutrient dense food to totally nourish your body.

2. LOW SUGAR

One ¼ cup serving of Paleo Passion Foods granola has only 4 GRAMS of sugar. Compare that to any other name brand granola, and it’s super low. Given that granola is typically a breakfast food, it’s really not a food that should be packed with added sugar. The low sugar content in this granola ensures that your energy is sustained throughout the day, instead of the way it might crash after eating a super sugary breakfast. Seriously, when it comes to granola, you can’t beat 4 grams of sugar per serving.

 

3. FIBER

Each serving of this granola has 2 grams of fiber. While this isn’t necessarily “high” fiber, it’s definitely much better than some name brand granolas that have no fiber at all. Fiber is so important to help us to feel full – 2 grams in a quarter cup sounds pretty good to me.

Added bonus: HEALTHY FAT

Speaking of nutrients that keep us full – what this granola lacks in fiber, it makes up for in healthy fats. The ingredient list alone shows that this granola is loaded with healthy fats through foods like walnuts, almonds, pecans, sunflower seeds and flaxseed. It contains 4 grams of polyunsaturated fat and 2 grams of monounsaturated fat (based off the Choco-Nuts flavor) – meaning 6 grams total of heart healthy, anti-inflammatory, satiating healthy fats.

How To Use It

 

Now that you’re obviously ready to hop on the Paleo Passion Foods train – let’s talk ways to incorporate it into your morning routine. I love adding a serving to my Greek yogurt with a little fruit for breakfast. It gives me everything I need for a balanced breakfast to keep me full and nourish my body. This granola also tastes amazing as a snack with almond milk – mix a little collagen in to add some protein, and you’ve got yourself the perfect filling snack.
